The Hidden Truth of Success

This article is a reminder that the secret to your success and happiness rests in a timeless truth that you likely don’t pay enough attention to.

Timeless truths are universal principles that govern Nature itself.

Universal principles (some call them “universal laws”) affect everything in existence equally throughout time. They are eternal. They are the fundamental parameters that organize life into the consistencies required for existence. They are so ever-present that we’ve become blind to them – invisibly hidden in plain sight.

These principles gave birth to you.

How well you align yourself with these invisible principles determines your level of success in life and business.

This is the reason I love books with staying power. These are the books that are as relevant today as the day they were written because they contain and reveal these universal principles and how to align with them.

One of my favourites in this category is a timeless classic called As A Man Thinketh by James Allen.

Allow to me treat you to a quote from Chapter 5:

“All that a man achieves and all that he fails to achieve is the direct result of his own thoughts. In a justly ordered universe, where a loss of equipoise would mean total destruction, individual responsibility must be absolute. A man’s weakness and his strength, purity and impurity, are his own and not another man’s. His sufferings and his happiness are evolved from within. As he thinks, so is he; as he continues to think, so he remains.”

If you actually invest (and yes it’s a worthwhile investment) the time to deeply ponder this quote, you might agree that we are all required by Nature to accept personal responsibility for our own thoughts and everything that springs forth from them: our feelings, words, decisions, actions, and results (successes & failures).

Your strengths and weaknesses are your own and no one else’s.

Your experience of life is yours.

This is wonderful because it means that the power to change your experience rests in your hands and your hands alone.

The power over your success in life is yours to keep …or give away. Either way, it’s under your control.

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”

– Eleanor Roosevelt

Some might argue that there are events beyond their control that cause pain and suffering.

While an event can cause pain, the suffering is optional. Things can only hurt you to the extent that you give them power over the way you think and who you decide to become as a result.

You are responsible. You are response-able.

You are the only one with the ability to respond to what happens to you.

“It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.”

– Epictetus

You will always respond or react in line with the way that you think.

The way you think is your “Attitude”.

Whether you allow your thoughts to be something you choose or to be chosen for you is part of the make-up of your Attitude. It’s still your choice.

If you blame others for your misfortune, you have taken on the attitude of a victim. Here, your way of thinking reinforces the idea of your powerlessness.

You are never powerless.

“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

– Viktor Frankl

Viktor Frankl was a psychologist and neurologist who survived the Nazi death camps during World War 2. He is well-known for his book Man’s Search for Meaning in which he shares his account of surviving the horror of the Nazi death camps and what he learned about himself, the human mind, and human spirit as a result of his experience. He said, Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”

It was Viktor’s attitude that allowed him to survive.

Attitude is Everything?

You’ve probably heard the expression, “Attitude is everything”.

Some have argued that it’s not. From their perspective, they’re right.

Like a tomato seed that holds the DNA to produce a tomato plant, your attitude (the way you think) holds within it the DNA of your future.

If an attitude is like a seed, it isn’t everything – it is the beginning of everything.

Remember, one apple seed can produce an entire orchard.

Pay constant attention. Your attitude is creating your future right now.

Choose it wisely.
